darlington warm shelter
December 21, 2022

With area temperatures expected to plunge into the teens at night over the Christmas weekend, the City of Darlington is opening to those in need the AW Stanley Gym at 107 Gary Street.

According to City Manager John Payne, “This weekend will likely be bitterly cold and dangerous for people who have no adequate shelter. The City of Darlington is happy to open the Stanley Gym to serve as a warm place where people can spend the night and receive a hot meal. This is truly a community effort, and we are fortunate to have so many caring volunteers.”

The AW Stanley Gym will be open 4:30 pm to 7:00 am, from Friday, December 23 through Monday, December 26. Local churches and Community Connections are spearheading the effort with cots and blankets and will staff the facility with volunteers.

Darlington Police Officers and Firemen will be on duty to do nightly walkthroughs to ensure a safe environment.
