City of Darlington to Install New $850,000 Sewer Pump System on Highway 34

DARLINGTON, S.C. (Oct. 9, 2024) – The City of Darlington is installing a new $850,000 sewer pump station near the McLeod Behavioral Health Services facility located on Highway 34.

The new sewer pump system that sits at the city limits sign is designed to promote residential development and replace an existing line that runs atop Black Creek. The new system, a new force main sanitary sewer line, will be bored under Black Creek, north of the bridge on the highway.

“The installation of this system will add a pump station to the Northeast side of the city near the Darlington County Club, and it’ll allow for the Water & Sewer Department to better serve McLeod Health and residents in the area,” said City of Darlington Director of Utilities, Charles Shugart. “We’re hoping the new system will also encourage developers to build residential neighborhoods on the undeveloped land near the property.”

The project is partially funded by a SC RIA SCIIP grant and the City of Darlington. In April 2024, Davis & Brown Engineering and Environmental Services in Florence, SC were engaged as the city engineers, and the project grant was awarded.

Frank Horne Construction out of Fair Bluff, NC has already mobilized and broke ground on the construction site. The project is expected to be completed this fall and no later than January 2025.

The effort marks the second major project for the department over the past couple of months. Most recently, the Water & Sewer Department completed major sewer upgrades on E. Broad St., and the repave for that project is nearly finished.
